Dad Left My Step-Mom is built on the weekend after a breakup, with Josie newly abandoned by her husband and his grown son Tyler staying over with her. Five episodes trace her hurt turning into a direct offer; the tone is confessional, intimate and openly uneasy about the family tie.
Premise and first two chapters
A marriage of many years ends with one announcement: Josie's husband has left her for another woman, and she is alone in a large house with a bed she dreads sleeping in. Tyler, his son and her stepson for a long stretch, drives over to stay with her until the shock wears off. Josie wants proof she is still desirable after twelve years of yoga her husband never noticed. Tyler wants to be decent about it, and his father keeps trying to reach him.
The opening episode turns on one blunt question, whether she looks old to him, and on his shaking hand while he helps with a tie at the back of her dress; he calls it wrong, and she asks him to stay through the weekend anyway. By the second instalment the husband is on the phone looking for Tyler, who is not answering. Josie reminds him he has been looking at her for three summers and tells him to drop the politeness. When the father finally reaches his son, what Tyler tells him is the question for episode 3.
