Premise and first two chapters
A fixation Kenzie Whitaker cannot shake brings her to a therapist's couch. The man she keeps picturing is engaged to her stepsister Rachel and lives in her mother's house, and the sessions are her attempt to stop. What she describes sounds less like an accident with every visit: Rachel told the pair to take the long route through the pines, Rachel lent her the fiancé for the drive, and Rachel speaks of sharing between stepsisters as a family rule. Kenzie wants the obsession gone; those around her seem to feed it.
Episode 1 cuts between the session and the drive, then Rachel's teasing questions and her blunt query to the fiancé about what he wants with Kenzie. The second episode reaches the shower: Kenzie overhears that question, stays under the water while he looks through fogged glass, and recalls that Rachel made room for him rather than calling him off. The therapist asks her to start from what happened after dark, and the story slips into a scene she still cannot sort out. What Kenzie admits about that night is what episode 3 has to bring out.
