Premise and first two chapters
A canceled date for an exclusive gala leaves Amanda Langford with a choice she refuses to make, which is walking in alone. Her husband is stuck at work again, so she turns to his son and orders him into his father's suit. At the event, guests assume the two of them are a couple, and Amanda answers their questions as if they were, claiming two years together. He wants to get through the night without embarrassing anyone. She wants to feel noticed, and lets the misunderstanding run.
The pilot covers the costume change, the arrival and a string of introductions in which she calls him husband and tells him to smile. Afterward she scolds him for staring all night and reveals that his father booked a hotel room for the evening that now has no one to use it but them. Episode 2 takes place inside that room. He protests that she is married to his father; she replies that for one night she is not anyone's wife. Whether he leaves before morning or stays in the role is the cliffhanger handed to episode 3.
