Premise and first two chapters
Forty-three text messages to a group of friends become evidence once the phone holding them is left lying in the kitchen. Ethan is spending a holiday break at the lakeside place owned by the family of his girlfriend, Mia. Every message describes her mother, Jessie, in admiring detail. Jessie finds the phone, scrolls through all of it and confronts him in her robe. He says he meant every word. That gives Jessie an agenda for the weekend, and Mia's plans to spend time down at the water leave her free to pursue it.
The first episode is the discovery and the confession, ending with Jessie promising that once Mia heads to the lake Ethan is all hers. In the second episode she sits him down and reads the messages back aloud, asking him to show her exactly where he would begin. Mia, oblivious, phones to say her lonely mother deserves a fun weekend and asks Ethan to keep her company. Then Mia comes back for her purse. Whether she sees anything when she walks in is left for episode 3.
