Behind on Rent follows Jake, a jobless tenant facing eviction by Friday, who pays his landlady Vanessa with something other than money. Once her daughter Mia discovers the arrangement, she demands the same and threatens to talk. Five episodes, bold and darkly comic, built on secrets kept from both sides.
Premise and first two chapters
An eviction notice on the apartment door gives Jake until Friday, and he owes three months of rent with neither work nor savings to cover it. Vanessa, the landlady, offers two choices: she phones the agency and has him removed, or they reach a private understanding. Jake takes the second, telling himself it is business. Vanessa wants control and a regular appointment. Her daughter Mia, who lives in the building, wants whatever her mother is getting and has the leverage to demand it. Jake wants to keep his apartment and keep both women apart.
The pilot moves from the confrontation over the debt to the first payment, which clears a single month, and then to Mia's arrival on the stairs. She guesses the terms quickly and offers silence for the same treatment. The second episode shows the double arrangement in motion. Jake dodges Mia for a week, blames the constant texts on spam, and is cornered while Vanessa is downstairs. Mia makes clear she wants more than her mother received. How long Jake can keep two landladies unaware of each other is the problem the series carries forward.
