Courtney's Secret traces a newcomer who rents from Jamie and quickly falls for Jamie's wife Courtney, while friendly neighbors like Nicole keep dropping by. Over five episodes the suburban welcome reveals a hidden agenda with him as the target. Suspenseful and suggestive, with a knowing voice-over hinting at the trap.
Premise and first two chapters
A new city and a fresh lease were supposed to give one man a clean start, and the plan lasts until he sees his landlord's wife. Jamie owns the rental and treats the new tenant with brisk friendliness, introducing Courtney with the remark that the street looks after its own, especially new arrivals. Courtney is warm, a little careless with a soapy sponge, and seems unhappy in her marriage, or so the tenant believes. Her own narration says otherwise: he felt sorry for her, without realizing he was the one at risk.
The opening episode covers the move, the soapy introduction and an unsettling discovery that ends in a curse. In episode 2 Nicole, from a few houses down, introduces herself with remarks that leave little doubt about her interest, and mentions that Courtney has told her all about him. Courtney then asks for help with something on her computer while Jamie is at work, and over iced tea offers to reveal a tattoo she got during a night she barely remembers. What the neighborhood actually wants from him is still hidden.
