Staycation with My Fiancee's Mother traces a lakeside holiday that should celebrate Jake and Sophie's engagement, until her mother, Veronica Parker, starts testing his resolve. Five episodes trade family dinners for quiet mornings alone with Veronica. A slow burn: polite at the table, dangerous once they are alone.
Premise and first two chapters
A lakeside week meant to celebrate an engagement puts Jake in a house with his fiancee Sophie and her mother, Veronica Parker, and the mother quickly becomes the problem. Sophie is giddy about the ring and wants her mother's approval. Her father is delayed, as usual, so the first evenings belong to the three of them. Veronica is gracious, amused and openly appraising, and she has already heard plenty about the man who keeps her daughter out late.
The pilot covers arrival, dinner and a toast to a week with nothing on the calendar. Sophie heads to bed, Veronica claims a dance with her future son-in-law and tells him to breathe, adding that she does not bite on the first night. The second episode finds Jake awake and unsettled, brushing off Sophie's questions. The next morning Sophie has been called into town for work, and Veronica asks him to help with a stretch, then mentions she is going to shower and that he may come along. She calls his name from the bathroom. Whether Jake steps through that door is the decision episode 3 has to show.
