Mum Got Sick On Our Holiday strands a stepfather with Harriet Seagrave at a beach resort after his wife falls ill on arrival. Told by his wife to keep Harriet entertained, he discovers she has plans of her own. Five episodes, an awkward British comedy of lies told over the phone.
Premise and first two chapters
Bad prawns on the first night confine a wife to the hotel room, and her instructions to her husband are to keep Harriet company all week. Harriet, his wife's adult daughter, takes the brief generously. She asks him to rub sun cream on her back, tells her mother on the phone that he is being very hands-on, and suggests booking a curtained VIP bed by the pool on her mother's card. Harriet wants to find out what he is like; he wants to do the right thing and keeps failing; the wife wants a holiday that is not ruined.
Episode 1 runs from the diagnosis to the sun-cream scene, the phone call and the bed booking, closing on his doubt about refusing. In the second episode Harriet admits she has been watching him since he danced with her mother at the wedding three years ago. She says she ignored the men staring at her by the pool, and things turn intimate. Then his wife texts, finally able to eat, asking for cookies from the shop. He promises ten minutes, and whether he makes it back in time is left open.
