Under the Chief stages a night shift at a hospital where Harriet, one shift away from finishing her probation, is pulled into the on-call room by the head of surgery while Vanessa, the head nurse hoping to see her fired, lingers outside. Five episodes, tense and quietly comic in equal measure.
Premise and first two chapters
A probation period ending at dawn leaves Harriet one night shift away from keeping her job, and the head nurse, Vanessa, is counting on her to fail. Harriet is awkward, self-conscious and stuck in scrubs a size too small. The chief of surgery, meanwhile, has been looking at her all week, which she can hardly believe. With the operating theatres finished for the night, the floor goes quiet and the paperwork piles up.
Episode 1 begins with Vanessa predicting Harriet will not last until morning, and the chief overruling her by taking Harriet with him for the night. He leads her to the on-call room, the only quiet space on the floor, tells Vanessa to postpone a note the board wants before seven and to keep everyone out. He invites Harriet to tell him to stop; she does not. The second episode stays largely outside the door, where Vanessa and a colleague speculate about how long the chief has been in there. Inside, Harriet swears at him and he likes it. Vanessa finally knocks, and whether she opens that door is the cliffhanger episode 3 resolves.
