Room 742 opens with a hotel keycard that unlocks a room already occupied by a silent man. The woman holding it, worn out after twelve hours of travel, decides to stay, and over five episodes his wife's arrival suggests the meeting was arranged. The register is mysterious and quiet, built on long silences.
Premise and first two chapters
A booking error, or what looks like one, puts two strangers in a single hotel room with no other vacancy in sight. The woman set off before dawn at five, has worn the same clothes for twelve hours and wants nothing more than to change and rest. The man already inside room 742 says almost nothing, which unsettles her more than any argument would. Reception cannot offer another room, and the phone call leaves her stuck where she is. Later, his wife enters the picture with an agenda that makes the mix-up look deliberate.
Episode 1 plays out in the doorway and on the phone to the front desk, then inside the room as she changes anyway and needles the man for staying quiet. By the second instalment the strangeness has settled into a standoff. A call comes in, the two accept that they are stuck, and she asks his name. When he refuses to answer, she gives him a nickname of her own. Who arranged the room, and why the wife wants to observe all of it, remains the puzzle the third episode inherits.
