The King's Chambermaid stages a palace affair between a king trapped in a political marriage and the servant who helps him dress at dawn. Across five episodes the queen is always within earshot, which shapes every move; the tone is courtly, hushed and romantic, with real danger behind each meeting.
Premise and first two chapters
A royal marriage made for politics leaves the king with a wife who watches everything and offers nothing. During seven days of Harvest Court the queen sends him her prettiest servant to dress him, and the woman takes her time with the laces. For twelve months she has studied him from below stairs, moved by the fact that no other lord in the keep ever thanks the help. He wants her company away from the court. She wants more than a secret visit, and knows an affair with a king can end on the gallows.
In the first episode a clumsy moment with his ring brings a steward's threat of punishment, and the king stops it with a threat of his own; she promises to turn down his bed at midnight. Episode 2 brings her back at that hour, and he asks her to stay rather than walk back downstairs. Then the queen knocks, asking why the bedchamber door is locked, and the servant passes on his answer that the king will spend the night alone. What the queen does with that refusal is the matter for episode 3.
